Galomy Oak
The Homestead
When Ryan and I (pre-divorce)  decided to build a new home, we had no idea what loomed
in our future - the loss of our son. The week our son was admitted to the hospital (he
never left...), we closed on the house we were selling. At some points, the house was the
only thing left to hold onto that looked like a positive step toward the future - on the
few trips over to Gloucester during the time in Norfolk at the Ronald McDonald House,
I'd drive out to the land just to sit, and let my mind stray...living out in the forest
continues to have that ability - no matter what happens during the day, there is still this
little secluded place of solace to run to where everything else stressful in my life
seems to fade away...

Roger Field, realtor with Gloucester Realty and contractor with Capstan, worked to
design and build a home that far exceeded any expectations! It is a little difficult to stand
in the bedroom that would have been Christian's - but his energy is all around, and things
seem somehow okay. At one point during the building process, in the late fall of 2007, a
swarm of ladybugs covered the house - thousands of them! Maybe this was just nature,
but the bright red insects lifted everyone's spirits - Christian loved the outdoors, and it
is there that we feel him.

Galomy Oak is a Mod-U-Kraf modular home, delivered in 3 pieces, and set upon a brick
basement. The home is extremely well crafted, and energy efficient. It was fascinating to
see it come together, and gratifying to put our own personal tastes and labor into it. It
was great to work alongside my father to install the floors (marble, and handscraped
bamboo), and temporary decks. There is still plenty of work to be done - there are plans
to finish the upstairs, and basement, and expand the deck. And of course, there is always
something to build or add with the dogs...

The kennel itself consists of 3 completely secure, enclosed runs - used when I am not
home, or when the dogs need some safe "dog time" - they frequently prefer being
outdoors to in. The long dirt road, 1,500 acres of adjacent trees, hills, wildlife, and
creek provide the dream playground for a crazy pack of vlcaks.
The 24 hour process of
delivering, setting, and
weatherproofing a modular
home - thank you Roger
Field, Gloucester Realty,
Capstan and C.R Creech!
