Health Testing

At Galomy Oak, good health and a long, happy life for our
dogs is a huge goal. One of the means of achieving this goal
is by selecting dogs from healthy lines to breed with.
Another way of achieving good health is by breeding from
genetically diverse lines. Since this is such a rare breed,
especially in the US, it is very important for breeders to do
their research, and make sure that the degree of
line-breeding is generally not too high in the dogs they
breed with, and also that lines with known problems -
looser hips, cardiac issues, etc - are minimally and very
carefully used.

Finally, a huge way of advancing the health in our breed is
by performing health tests. At Galomy Oak, the following
tests are performed on dogs prior to breeding:

Penn-Hip hip dysplasia (this test is reliable as early as 4
months of age, we test at two years of age)

* OFA Hip Dysplasia (Used in conjunction with PennHip)

CERF (Canine Eye registry foundation) within 1 year of each
breeding (must be repeated, as some diseases show up later in
life) on both parents

Elbow Dysplasia (OFA) after 2 years of age

Degenerative Myelopathy (OFA)
This horrible and little talked about inherited disease can be
tested for as soon as puppies are born with a simple, $65
saliva swab taken at home, and sent off. It is widespread in at
least 100 breeds and mixed breeds, It is non-curable or
correctible. It will lead to paralysis and death, generally
sometime after the age of six years. Carriers and At-risks are
present throughout our breed. Carriers don't develop the
disease, and can be safely bred to non-carriers. At-risks can
also be bred to non-carriers (but will produce 100%
carriers).
